| Call Signs #5 saw two important developments in the project. The first was the expanded use of found objects, introduced in Call Signs 3/4 in the form of green scourers as the circuit board support; the second was a wall drawing to link the units together conceptually. Although I majored in painting at art college, this was the first drawing or painting I had done since graduating in 1997. |
| Where the islands in Calls Signs 3/4 had been tightly constructed, jewel-like objects, this exhibition used knots of fuse wire to hold the compents together. This made the construction of the objects much looser and open to different constructions. The first of the new works was composed around a piece of grey plastic strap, later sold at the AGNSW's annual fundraising auction. Other materials included a fruit net, plastic bags, and lace-like motifs cut from platic packaging. |
| The charcoal wall drawings served as indications of direction, suggesting an ellusive narrative. The caligraphic quality was also a precursor to Call Signs #6 which drew on Chinese landscape painting as its source. |
